Born in 1974 in Paris, he now lives and works in Lisbon.

The artist works photography, manipulating it by using models and reusing other images, blurring the frontiers between reality and artificiality.

João Paulo Serafim had already several solo shows. In 2008, he presents “The Improbable Museum” at the Centre Culturel Gulbenkian in Paris and the Blanes Museum in Montevideo. In 2006, he presented “Je t’aime moi non plus” at the gallery Box4 in Rio de Janeiro, and in 2005 at the gallery Baginski. Another solo exhibition in 2005 was “Klauzal Tér” presented at the Cultural Centre Emmerico Nunes, in Sines, and at the Photographic Archive in Lisbon.

He has participated in several group shows, e.g. in 2008 “Paisagem & Povoamento” at the Emmerico Nunes Cultural Centre, Sines, Portugal, “Nuit de l’Europe” at Rencontres d’Arles, France, “AAFNY (Affordable Art Fair of New York)”, New York, USA, "Substance” in Spike Island , Bristol, UK. In 2007, “Remembering Jack Kerouac” at Espaço Avenida, Lisbon, “Open Studio do Sítio das Artes” at CAMJAP/Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, Lisbon, “Young Art Europe 2007” at Moya - Museum of Young Art, Vienna, Austria, and “ Homo Migratus” at Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, Lisbon, Portugal.

Since 2007 he has also participated in the creation of theatre pieces such as: “Ensaio/Essay” by Victor Hugo Pontes, “Lar Doce Lar” by Maria Gil, “Passeio ao Norte 1963” by Joana Craveiro, João Paulo Serafim and Gonçalo Alegria.

In 2006, he won the Purificacion Garcia Photography Award. João Paulo Serafim has his works represented in several Portuguese collections, as e.g. in the António Cachola Collection in Elvas, the PLMJ Foundation in Lisbon; or the collec¬tion of the Banco Privado, the Modern Art Centre of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation or the BES-ART collection from the bank Espírito Santo; in Spain, he is represented in the collection Purificacíon Garcia.
