Born in Nova Iguaçu, Rio de Janeiro, 1964, the artist lives and works in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Graduated in Fine Arts at the College of Fine Arts at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, Jarbas Lopes is one of the Brazilian artists that has marked importantly the art scene of his country, not only with his installations as well with his performances (e.g. Troca-Troca in 2002), being present in the International art scene as well. Actively producing since 1990, he uses mostly not noble materials for his works that are ‘recycled’ and reconfigured into new objects.

In 2008, he will make his debut in Portugal with an individual show at the Baginski, Gallery/Projects in Lisbon. He has been recently present with the solo show “Jarbalopolis”, at the Daniel Reich Gallery in New York, and another project he’s been working on since 2001, “Cicloviaárea” has been shown at the ASU Museum of Art, Phoenix in Arizona, USA. In 2003, he participated in the 8th Biennale of Havana and in the group show "Gambiarra - New Art from Brazil", at the Gasworks Gallery in London. In 2002, he participated in the group show “Off the grid” at Gallery Lehman Maupin, in New York.

He is represented, between others, in the collections of the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, the Henry Moore Foundation, London, the Arizona State University Museum, USA, and the Cisneros Fontanals Art Foundation, USA.
