Gonçalo Sena was born in 1984, Lisbon. Currently he lives and works between Lisbon and Berlin. He concluded the MFA at the Dutch Art Institute, Arnhem, in 2011 (Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation grantee), and got a degree in Communication Design at the Faculdade de Belas Artes de Lisboa, in 2007.
His practice focuses on sculptural and architectonic universes, exploring their material and spatial processes through objects, drawings and installations. In the beginning of 2011 he had a solo exhibition at Galleria Enrico Fornello, in Milan, followed by the group show "Como proteger-se do tigre", part of the XVI Bienal de Cerveira (curated by João Mourão and Luis Silva). During the second semester of this year, he was selected (by Julião Sarmento) to the "BYTS – Bosch Young Artists Talents", at Stedelijk Museum, s'Hertogenbosch. In 2010, he starts the year with his first solo show at Baginski Galeria/Projectos, and later makes an intervention at Monumentos Megalíticos de Alcalar, within the ALLgarve exhibitions program (curated by Nuno Faria). in the same year he participates in the group show "Display: Objects Buildings and Space", at Palácio Quintela, Lisbon. In 2009 he in nominee for EDP New Artists Award, show his work at the Museu da Electricidade/Fundação EDP, Lisbon. He also participates in the group exhibitions “On the Razor’s Edge”, at Galeria Heinrich Ehrhardt, Madrid (curated by Pablo Flórez), and “JENSEITS”, at enblanco, Berlin. Between April and July from this year he co-curates and co-organizes the cycle of exhibitions and events "Estates–General", at ArteContempo, Lisbon. In the year of 2008, he shows with Diogo Evangelista "I used to be indecisive... now I'm not sure", at Galeria Alecrim50, Lisbon, and participates in the group exhibitions “Ocorrence”, at Baginski Galeria/Projectos, "Eurásia", at the House-Museum Dr. Anastácio Gonçalves, Lisbon, “Finisterra”, at Centro Cultural de São Lorenço (curated by Maria do Mar Fazenda), “Tracção”, at ArteContempo, Lisbon, and “A River Ain’t Too Much To Love”, at Spike Island, Bristol. in 2007 he was nominee for "Anteciparte", and shows at the National History Museum, Lisbon, and participates in the group exhibition “Antes que a produção cesse”, at Espaço Avenida, Lisbon. in 2006 participates in “A Derrota” (with André Romão), at Galeria Lagar de Azeite, Oeiras, and "O Pavilhão de Augusta Narval", at R. Alecrim 28b, Lisbon. In 2005 is nominee for the II Painting Prize Ariane de Rothschild. Since 2007, Gonçalo Sena runs the publisher ATLAS PROJECTOS with André Romão and Nuno da Luz. download .pdf file |
